On March 6, 1957, independence from Britain was granted and a national flag, based on the red-white-green tricolor of a patriotic organization, was hoisted. A black "lodestar of African freedom" was added and the white stripe was changed to yellow, symbolizing wealth. Green is for forests and farms, red for the independence struggle. |
